Forgetting the past

I once worked with a Midwestern business that followed the unofficial Midwestern work ethic: When things aren't going as well as they used to, work harder.

When growth slowed or stagnated, the company believed that if everyone just worked harder, everything would work out. Consequently, the management and personnel of this company worked increasingly longer hours and often became the focus of blame if the numbers weren't met.

It seems that business people live in their own business paradigm and apply solutions from the world they know. They follow the cliché that if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got. The cliché might actually work if everything stays the same. But when business conditions change, the cliché and the Midwestern work ethic may fail as business strategies.

The apostle Paul told the Philippians how to be successful in a calling. And his advice is good for us in our business callings as well.

He told them:

...Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. (Phil 3:13-15 NKJV)

We, like Paul, may have to forget some old ways of doing things, including old ways of being successful. Conditions have changed. The greatest paradigm shift in Paul's life was when he was knocked off his feet by the blinding light of Christ. His old paradigm of success was thrown out the window. He very quickly had a new paradigm with a new goal. And he became forward thinking and singularly focused on a new prize.

As Kingdom people in business, we have the same opportunity. Paul told the Philippians that God would reveal to them how to focus on the prize. And God will reveal new strategies to us also as we mature in our business purpose.

Paul told the Colossians that he thanked the Father "who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love...." (Col 1:12-13 NKJV)

We too have been conveyed into the kingdom of the Son of God's love. Like Paul, our definition of success has changed, and so have our goals. And, like Paul, we now have access to the King's strategy. Some ways of doing business from the past are best forgotten. The Father will equip us to be able to handle any circumstances because we are now under His authority in the Kingdom.
