You are your word

A while back I hired a web developer for a project. He was a fine individual who had some great insights and skills. We developed a project plan for a web upgrade. But the project quickly got off track.

I discovered that he promised a lot but had trouble delivering.

To be or not to be

"Winning strategies." That was the management team's focus for the next year. Although the company was very well known in its industry and had been in existence for decades, it was struggling to increase sales. Management held long and repeated strategy sessions to come up with a possible magic bullet for the next year. They changed product bundles, revised compensation packages, added incentives, and created new promotions.

And when the new fiscal year began, the new strategies were launched with much fanfare. Upper management made sure everyone was on board, and managers in the field worked hard to focus their sales reps.

Living on Less

Simplify. Sort out. Start Fresh ... A tagline from a gap advertisement that I cut out of a magazine over ten years ago. It spoke to me. Jumped off of the page. Made me long for more of just that! It didn’t make me go out and buy more Gap clothes, but it sent me on a journey that I believe is worth all of us taking.

I’d like to tell you that from that day on I began to live a life on less. A more simple existence. Less stuff. But yes, as with all things, change takes time. There were seasons where we seemed to be adhering to this philosophy, but you know what happens, you start making more money, you start seeing more things that you just have to have.

Unproductivity and True Work

E-mail

Many of us can recognize unproductivity when it comes to us looking like blatant idleness, but it is much harder to identify when it bustles and scurries about.  Let me explain.  To understand unproductivity we must understand the concept of true work and then can recognize unproductivity in the light of avoidance of true work.

To me true work has three facets: Effort, Priority, and Diligence. Let's see what happens to productivity when we systematically remove each one of these three ingredients to see what's left.

First, let's take out effort.

"Shaken, Not Stirred"

E-mail

Who would have imagined that James Bond's preferred way to have his favorite alcoholic beverage prepared would actually be prophetic. Certainly not my wife and me. One of our early dates was at a Bond flick, and he ordered his customary drink (as he happens to do in many of his movies) "shaken, not stirred."

We, on the other hand, would rather be stirred and not shaken. We can be stirred to action by seeing an opportunity in a business venture. And Paul admonished Timothy to "stir up that gift that's in you." We can even be emotionally stirred by something we see. Perhaps it's someone's pain that we want to alleviate. It could be that our deep emotions are stirred by the heroic action of an ordinary person.

Being "stirred" implies some positive consequence might come about as a result. Being "shaken," on the other hand is a far different story--as in, our economy is being shaken.
